“Are you okay, Finn?”

It’s the next day, and I’ve found him sitting at the kitchen table, before anyone else has got up. I mean, the only reason I’m up so early is that I had to pee—new fun pregnancy things—and on the way back from the outhouse noticed him.

A shadow slumped on one of the benches.

“I’m fine,” he says, tilting his head to the side, giving me the ghost of a smile. “Get back to bed. Get some more sleep. You need your rest.”

“As do you,” I say stubbornly. I draw my shawl around me, shivering. The dawn isn’t far off, colors streaking the sky outside the windows, casting a yellow light into the kitchen, but it’s cold. “Come to bed with me. Auntie says we can sleep in today.”

It’s the day of the goddess Elea, apparently, a goddess I’ve never heard of. Possibly a Fae goddess. She sounds a lot like our Zerene, goddess of the earth and cultivated plants.

He says nothing, a crease between his pale brows.

With a sigh, I sit down beside him and take his hand, rub my fingertips over his long fingers. “What’s wrong? Are you unwell?”

“I said I’m fine,” he snaps, then turns his face away. “Fuck, I’m sorry. You really should go to bed.”

“And you really should tell me what the matter is. Maybe I can help. You know I can’t sleep knowing something is bothering you.”

His broad shoulders rise and fall. He turns toward me, squeezes my hand. “Bad dreams.”

“Oh.” It pains me I hadn’t realized. I thought that was getting better.

All my men have bad dreams, and the more I know of their pasts, the better I understand why, but they seem calmer, more relaxed. As if this happiness is slowly seeping into their thoughts and dreams, chasing away the darkness.

“I have this… bad feeling in my gut.”

“Don’t…” I stop myself. You can’t tell someone not to feel something. It’s not possible, or helpful. “Any idea why? I mean… our pasts haven’t instilled any trust in us for the future. For good times. I know I have trouble believing this life is real sometimes.”

“It’s not that, it’s…” He shakes his head as if trying to shake off the dark thoughts. “It’s instinct, trying to tell me something. I’m not sure we’re safe here. It wasn’t supposed to be permanent, we were supposed to go further south—”

“Finn, we’re safe. Why wouldn’t we be? Nobody knows where we are.”

“Lezar knows, but that’s not what I meant. I think… war is coming, whether we like it or not.”

“No.” My turn to shake my head. The backs of my eyes burn. “No.”

He rests his other hand on my belly. “We’d do anything. Don’t you know that yet? We’d do fucking anything to protect you and our babies.”

“Don’t… don’t say that. It sounds ominous. There is peace. Why would there be war?”

“Because it’s been building up for a while, this tension, this mobilization. You know it, Ari.”

“No, I don’t believe it,” I whisper and wrench away from him, getting up.
